hurricane sandy could impact the upcoming presidential election, but isn't slowing last-minute efforts to get votes in swing states. there will be several rallies in ohio. and the president travels to florida. we go live to washington with the roundup. hey, molly. >> reporter: yes, the president will leave tonight, fly to florida, do a campaign event in florida tomorrow and fly back to d.c. to monitor the storm. because of sandy, the president has cancelled a stop in virginia tomorrow and one in colorado for tuesday. the white house says president obama is getting regular updates on the storm and said the federal emergency management agency, fema, has already deployed teams and pre-staged resources to potentially affected states and fema is in close contact with states up and down the east coast, to make sure there are no unmet needs. one concern for both campaigns is that the storm could hinder early voting in ohio, north carolina and virginia. one democratic senator said this about the impact on the president's campaign. >> the storm will throw havoc into the race. i was supposed to

on the presidential race and we are now just one week before election day. the president is off the campaign trail. he is monitoring the storm from the white house doing his job as both commander in chief and chief executive. >> we have pre-positioned assets so that fema personnel are working closely with state and local governments. we're making sure that food and water and emergency generation is available for those communities that are going to be hardest hit. transportation is going to be tied up for a long time and probably the most significant impact for a lot of people in addition to flooding is going to be getting power back on. the fact is a lot of these emergency crews will not be able to get into position to start restoring power until some of these winds have died down. >> one of the events that the president skipped was this ohio rally with bill clinton where vice president joe biden stood in for him. >> folks, i know you're expecting the real president, the present president, reverend, i just want you to know, he asked me to express his regrets for not being able to be here but, you know

will impact an election that is now just eight days away with early voting already under way. we want to get straight to the latest update, and for that nbc news meteorologist dillon drier joins me with a look. not much has changed? >> that's unfortunate. it is still a strong category 1 hurricane at this time, and even if it changes into something post-tropical as it makes its way towards the new jersey coastline, this is a strange hybrid between a once tropical system, a hurricane right now, and then transforming and taking on more of the characteristics of a nor'easter. this makes this an unprecedented type of storm. it starts as a hurricane and developing into this nor'easter. right now we still see it south-southeast of new york city by more than 250 miles. look at the direction. it has official taken the turn to the north and northwest moving at 18 miles per hour. so we'll see this intensify and conditions get worse all across the mid-atlantic region. we will see this storm system produce a lot of coastal flooding here because of that storm surge. we made it through a high tide this mor

before tuesday's election. it's the october johns report from the government will be released in just about 90 mosts. both the obama campaign and the romney campaign hope the numbers will boost those economic arguments they've been making through this campaign and right into the final days of the race. we have complete coverage of what to expect this morning. let's begin with christine. she's got a look at what we could see. >> could see an unemployment rate that kicks up to about 7.9%. that's the forecast of economists surveyed by cnn money, soledad. 125,000 jobs added overall. for net new job creation. the important thing here is the trend. and it is the trend that has been so important to american families. american workers. and the two political campaigns, quite frankly. the president took office with unemployment rate at 7.8%, soledad. and then embarked on a massive stimulus plan and unemployment rate kept rising to 10%. but then started to come down. started to come down and is now back at 7.8%. and we got that number, of course, last month. and that was a big surprise overall.

and the presidential general election. meanwhile, president obama has added the "new york times" to his endorsement column, the editorial page listed obama's achievement like saving the auto industry and health care reform as reasons for the endorsement. it he has not backed a republican since dwight eisenhower. >> ohio considered quite the price that could win either condition dat at the house. >> obama is scheduled to leave washington, he's not scheduled to leave washington today in fact he's staying close to the white house because of this storm. >> in newest poll in the state of ohio says mitt romney may have condition to be concerned. as we have said, it's a close rate there, we have asked likely voters who their choice is for president. barack obama has a 50%, a 46% margin over mitt romney -- they both have spent several days in the buckeye state and have more on the calendar. >>> critical information for millions of people to know, as hurricane sandy approaches the northeast, josh levs with the hurricane details as they come in. >> new information coming in by the minute. in just a matter of

the impact on the election, sir? >> i am not worried at this point about the impact on the election. i'm worried about the impact on families and i'm worried about the impact on our first responders. i'm worried about the impact on our economy and on transportation. the election will take care of itself next week. >> and with only eight days to go, the election just might have to take care of itself. president obama shut down his campaign activities today. there are no public campaign events scheduled tomorrow for president obama. or vice president joe biden. the romney campaign announced mitt romney will host a so-called "storm relief event" in ohio tomorrow with nascar's richard petty. and country music's randy owen. if the serious aftermath of this hurricane runs into this weekend then for all practical purposes the candidates may have already made their closing arguments to the voters. what they have to say now may not be heard over the storm coverage. team obama's last public act took place in ohio while the president was in washington. >> we went to florida last night and he got
